Chrudim, 24 November 2005. On Thursday 24 November, tape cutting and a ceremonial opening marked the completion of the upgrading of a waste water treatment plant in Chrudim. The town of Chrudim now has at its disposal a modern waste water treatment plant (hereafter WWTP), which complies both with the Czech Republic’s and European Union‘s laws.

Modernization of the WWTP and changes in technology increased its capacity and in the future the WWTP will be able to cover the needs of the local industry and to allow connection of other villages in the vicinity. The WWTP‘s capacity rose from 41 700 to 50 000 equivalent inhabitants.

The cost of modernization of the waste water treatment plant totalled CZK 105 million. The project was partially funded by a subsidy of CZK 26.25 million from the Ministry of Agriculture, Českomoravská záruční a rozvojová banka (Czech-Moravian Guarantee and Development Bank) provided a loan of CZK 52.5 million, and the remaining sum (ca 26.25 million) was paid by the investor, Vodovody a kanalizace Chrudim a.s.

The upgrading of the WWTP, which was carried out between October 2003 and November 2005, the original activation tanks were transformed into denitrification and regeneration tanks, new technological equipment was installed in the settlement and compacting tanks, and two completely new activation tanks with a modern aerating system and a new blowing facility were built. A new separator and dewatering device were added to the sedimentation system. A new membrane gas holder for biogas is also worth mentioning. The biogas is then used in the cogeneration unit for the production of power needed in the waste water treatment plant.

Vodovody a kanalizace Chrudim a.s. was the investor and operator of the project. The design was drafted by VIS, spol. s r.o. Hradec Králové, which also provided engineering services. Vodohospodářské stavby branch of VCES a.s. was general contractor of the project.
