Waste water treatment plant i Hradec Králové under extensive roconstruction

The waste water treatment plant in Hradec Králové had been launched in 1995 and during last two years it was going under extensive reconstruction. Nowadays, construction works has been finished and the plant is starting new period of trial operation which will run until the end of 2011.

In connection with the access of the Czech Republic into the European Union, there has been further strengthening levels of total nitrogen in discharged waste water. Following this reason, the owner of the wastewater treatment plant - Vodovody a kanalizace Hradec Kralove, a.s. decided to proceed to the next extensive renovation, which was intended to increase the nitrogen removal from waste water.

The essence of the reconstruction of the total nitrogen removal is the construction of a bicameral post-denitrifying filter. Its delivery was provided by company VWS MEMSEP, spol. s r.o. This technology is the first of its kind in the Czech Republic. It consists of two filter chambers with a total surface of 84 m2, Approximately 50% of treated waste water is pumped into them. This water has been drained so far directly into the Elbe. Now, this waste water flows through the filter chambers through a layer of specially prepared polystyrene beads. On the surface of these beads there are micro-organisms able to remove nitrogen (as nitrate) from wastewater and convert it into nitrogen gas. This palls into the atmosphere in the form of bubbles. This biochemical reaction works without air (anoxic conditions). It is necessary to supply bacteria with a source of nutrients from organic material – the methanol is used.

The main construction contractor was the joint venture of companies: VCES (construction part) and Kunst spol s r.o. (technology part). Chief designer of the construction was Pöyry Environment a.s. The project worth is CZK 140 mill.
