Duplication of sewer under Chrudimka River will protect the eastern part of Pardubice during torrential rains

Pardubice, 3 July 2009 – A fundamental part of sewer inverted siphon construction was done today. The old inverted siphon transfers waste water from the eastern part of Pardubice to the waste water treatment plant in Semtín under the bottom of Chrudimka River. Installation of new conduit will distinctively intensify capacity of the sewer. The current conduit did not have sufficient capacity mainly in case of torrential rains, therefore there´s a brand new conduit under construction. For people on the east side of Chrudimka River the endangering will be lower in case of impletion of the current sewer capacity. Construction of inverted siphon is a part of building-up of a new sewer system in Dubina and it´s also a part of extensive project Labe – Loučná – project financially supported by EU.

„The current inverted siphon by the Prokop´s Bridge was the only one sewer connection of both Chrudimka riversides and in case of failure or impletion it would not be possible to get sink water over on the other riverside and to the waste water treatment plant,” said Josef Fedák, the director of VAK Pardubice, a.s., the investor of this project.

The original inverted siphon under Chrudimka River was built in 1911 as a monolithic concrete sewer with inner basalt facing. According to the town development and sewer system extension a demand for capacity increase and operational safety of this only one sewer connection of both parts of Pardubice occurred. This problem will be solved by the construction of e new inverted siphon under Chrudimka river within the frame of associated project Labe – Loučná.

The type of construction of this 40 m long inverted siphon is unique. With regard to narrow space it was necessary to assemble the conduit on the riverside and lately lay down into the prepared excavation in the bottom of Chrudimka River. The excavation was ditched by a rare subaquatic bulldozer Komatsu. New conduit will be situated 2,4 m under the river bottom. On both riversides the bunding against the landslip were settled first. The conduit was turned vertically to the flow of Chrudimka River and was slowly filled by water to be submerged to the right depth. After flooding the inverted siphon with water and after its stabilization to the final position a heavy stone rip – rap will be realized on account of security of inverted siphon against egestion. VCES a.s. prepared and realized this technically interesting work.

Labe – Loučná project solves annex of sewer system in Pardubice and surrounding areas. It´s financially supported by EU through Cohesion Fund. Totall costs of the project reach up to 27 mil. CZK. Dotation from Cohesion Fund EU amounts 12,5 mil CZK. Union of three companies – Metrostav a.s., VCES a.s. and Chládek a Tintěra a.s. is the contractor of this construction.

Final costs for building up a new inverted siphon will reach 650 000 €. This construction will be finished in September 2009, after 5 months from the very beginning of work.
